Hemkund Sahib

A Sacred Lake Guarded by Seven Himalayan Peaks | Taggetaways

Enquiry NOW

High in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district lies one of the most spiritually powerful and visually breathtaking pilgrimage destinations in India—Hemkund Sahib. Perched at an elevation of 4,329 metres above sea level, this revered Sikh shrine sits beside a pristine glacial lake known as Hemkund, meaning the “Lake of Snow.”

Surrounded by seven majestic mountain peaks known as the Saptashringa, Hemkund Sahib appears almost otherworldly. The still waters of the lake reflect the towering mountains and the striking white structure of the gurudwara, creating a landscape of profound serenity. For Sikh devotees, Hemkund Sahib marks the sacred place where Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, is believed to have meditated in a previous life.

Today, the gurudwara stands as a symbol of devotion, resilience, and faith, drawing pilgrims and trekkers from across the world. With Taggetaways, travellers can discover the extraordinary spiritual and natural beauty of Hemkund Sahib while experiencing one of the most remarkable Himalayan journeys.

A Sacred Shrine in the Lap of the Himalayas

Enquiry NOW

Hemkund Sahib is one of the highest gurudwaras in the world, and its location adds to its mystical charm. The gurudwara stands on the edge of the crystal-clear Hemkund Lake, whose icy waters remain frozen for much of the year.

The shrine itself is an architectural marvel. Built using white marble and concrete, the gurudwara features a distinctive star-shaped design that blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Its sloping roof helps withstand heavy snowfall, while the structure’s simplicity reflects the spiritual purity associated with the site.

The calm lake and the snow-capped Saptashringa peaks form a natural amphitheatre around the shrine. The entire area radiates tranquillity, making it a place where visitors can pause, reflect, and connect with the divine.

For many pilgrims, simply sitting beside the lake and gazing at the reflections of the mountains in its icy waters becomes a deeply meditative experience.

The Rediscovery of a Sacred Site

The story of Hemkund Sahib’s rediscovery is as fascinating as the site itself. The sacred location is believed to be mentioned in the Dasam Granth, a revered Sikh scripture attributed to Guru Gobind Singh Ji. In this text, the Guru describes a place called “Hemkunt Parbat Sapt Shring”, a lake surrounded by seven peaks where he performed meditation in a previous incarnation.

In the late nineteenth century, Sikh scholars began searching for the geographical location described in these sacred verses. One of the earliest figures involved in this quest was Pandit Tara Singh Narotam, who conducted research to identify the possible site.

His work was later published by the renowned Sikh scholar Bhai Vir Singh, whose writings inspired many devotees to continue the search.

The breakthrough came in 1933, when Sant Sohan Singh, a retired granthi of the Indian Army, successfully located the site during his exploration of the Himalayan region. The local inhabitants referred to the place as Lokpal, a remote glacial lake surrounded by seven peaks.

Although some initially questioned the discovery, Bhai Vir Singh later visited the site and confirmed that it matched the description from the Dasam Granth. With his support and financial assistance, plans were made to build a gurudwara at this sacred location.

Over time, the shrine was constructed and developed, transforming Hemkund Sahib into one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Sikhism.

A Symbol of Interfaith Harmony

While Hemkund Sahib is primarily a Sikh pilgrimage destination, it also holds deep significance in Hindu mythology. According to ancient texts such as the Markandeya Purana, this region was once a place where sages performed intense penance and meditation.

It is believed that Rishi Medhasa meditated on the banks of the lake, and that Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Rama, also performed penance in this area.

To honour this shared spiritual heritage, a Lakshman Temple stands near the gurudwara, symbolising the harmony between Sikh and Hindu traditions.

This coexistence of sacred beliefs makes Hemkund Sahib a powerful example of India’s rich spiritual diversity. Pilgrims from different faiths visit the site, united by a shared sense of reverence for the Himalayan landscape and its sacred history.

The Journey to Hemkund Sahib

Reaching Hemkund Sahib is not an easy journey—but that is precisely what makes the pilgrimage so meaningful. The trek is both physically demanding and spiritually uplifting, offering travellers a profound connection with nature and faith.

The journey begins at Govindghat, located along the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway. From here, pilgrims embark on a 13-kilometre trek to reach the scenic village of Ghangaria, which serves as the final settlement before the ascent to Hemkund Sahib.

The trail from Govindghat to Ghangaria winds through lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and mountain streams. Along the way, travellers are treated to spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan valleys.

Ghangaria acts as the base camp for pilgrims visiting both Hemkund Sahib and the nearby Valley of Flowers.

The Final Ascent

From Ghangaria, the final leg of the journey begins—a steep 5-kilometre climb that leads to the sacred lake and gurudwara.

The trail becomes increasingly challenging as the altitude rises. Yet with every step, the scenery becomes more dramatic. Snow patches appear along the path, and the cool mountain air grows thinner and sharper.

Around three kilometres from Ghangaria, travellers catch glimpses of the enchanting Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its vibrant alpine blooms.

Finally, after the demanding climb, pilgrims arrive at the breathtaking Hemkund Lake. The sight of the star-shaped gurudwara reflected in the crystal-clear water is nothing short of magical.

For many visitors, this moment marks the culmination of both a physical and spiritual journey.
